Post your lab suggestions here

We will have daily labs led be different people (some of you), so please post your lab subject matter ideas and how you might lead a lab. Have an idea for both one and two-hour labs. If you are interested in a proposed lab, please indicate this in the blog as well and as we near the event, we will tally up the interest generated by each proposed lab and make a decision about what happens when.

Two things I would love to work on. 1. working with eyes closed. Not blindfolded. Just closed. Finding intimacy in the dance. This often works well with music. Could be 1/2 hour or hour long. 2. Mirroring into a dance. Eye contact slow mirroring with no contact that ends with contact. Can incorporate theatricality and body-based character contact dances. Stretches habitual contact dancing patterns. Better in a 2 hour format.

I’ll have various ideas, but I’m interested in making a space in the morning, maybe 8-9:30, for some structures like authentic movement and contemplative dance practice.

1.I am inspired to lead a lab around the theme of “Saying No in the context of a CI Jam.” I propose brainstorming all the ways we can think of to say “no,” all the synonyms we can think of for “saying no,” and then I’d facilitate some scenarios & exercises around this theme. This could be a one or two hour process depending on the amount of people involved. 2. If the interest is there, I’d be willing to lead a follow-up lab on the theme “Entering and Exiting.” Using a couple scores I would introduce a bunch of different options for entering & exiting, leaving it open-ended for participants to discover more on their own. Again, a one or two hour process depending on amount of people. 3. I’ll be available for a few individual 1/2 hr. mentoring sessions if anyone wants to work on some specific skills, or just dance and receive constructive feedback. By appointment. 4. Again, by appointment, I’ll be offering some free individual Feldenkrais lessons (”Functional Integration.”) Probably two per day. I’ll have a sign-up sheet.

I’ve got multiple lab ideas, and I’d love to facilitate any of them, alone or with a co-facilitator: 1. Exploring entrances into moving dancing and how we become attuned and embodied just before entering. What are different types of entries? 2. Receptivity - looking at sensory awareness, back spaces, and exploring peripheral vision. 3. Group Improv: Identifying the most compelling idea in the space and committing to it. Letting go as a new compelling idea emerges. Dialoguing about what makes an ensemble contact dance compelling to watch. 4. Redirecting weight and momentum: exploring how to accept and deflect/redirect weight that we ultimately can only hold in passing. Being able to say yes to someone else’s weight/momentum while protecting our bodies and using our body structure to support the exchange.
